A 26-year-old, of Ukrainian nationality, has been missing since Friday, August 28, at Praia da Ursa in Sintra. The disappearance was reported at 11:50am by tourists who were nearby, after the young man entered the sea with friends and got into difficulty in the breaking wave zone. The search operations, which involved maritime assets, firefighters, Maritime Police and SeaWatch project members, were suspended on Sunday evening and are set to continue through the usual daily patrols of the National Maritime Authority.
Praia da Ursa is known for its natural setting and the demanding nature of its access, which is approximately 2.6 kilometres long, with no lifeguard on duty. The Sintra Municipal Council advises against descending to and staying at the location, emphasising that there is no lifeguard, there are no quick access routes for rescue equipment and that the rocky configuration can heighten risks when sea conditions change.
Despite the adverse safety conditions, the beach recently gained international recognition by being included by the Michelin Guide in a list of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This contrast between its tourist fame and the dangerous nature of the access has been raising concerns, especially after this incident.
