The Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Portalegre currently operates with over 60% of its staff composed of immigrants. The institution acknowledges that this foreign workforce is essential for maintaining its daily operations. The institution's provedora, Luísa Moreira, stated in comments to Rádio Portalegre that, without these immigrant workers, the Misericórdia would not be able to ensure its operations. The need for foreign labor is particularly felt in the most demanding areas of care, where the institution's 107 residents are assisted.
