On August 28, 2026, Madagascar notified the Committee on Safeguards of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it had initiated, on August 13 of the same year, a safeguards investigation on imports of self-adhesive labels, packaging and other printed items on paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles or similar materials. The decision was made in response to the significant increase in these imports, which, according to the authorities, could be negatively affecting the local industry.
The investigation seeks to assess the impact of these imports on the domestic economy and determine whether protective measures are necessary to safeguard national production. The government of Madagascar expressed concern about the sustainability of related industrial sectors and highlighted that the initiative follows the norms established by the WTO for this type of investigation.
Interested parties, including local manufacturers and importers, will have the opportunity to present their views and evidence throughout the process. Madagascar affirmed its commitment to transparency and dialogue throughout the investigation, which is expected to be concluded within a timeframe stipulated by the WTO.
