At least one person died and about 15 remain missing after a flash flood hit the Grand Canyon, one of the most visited tourist destinations in the United States, the National Park Service reported on Sunday. The water hit on Saturday the areas of Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch, in Arizona, forcing dozens of people to leave.
The body of a 46-year-old man was found Sunday afternoon near Crystal Rapids, on the banks of the Colorado River, according to the NPS. The number of missing was revised downward: initially, authorities had reported that more than 20 people were unaccounted for.
Videos recorded by hikers show a strong surge of muddy water advancing along trails and under footbridges, while tourists tried to escape the current. The causes of the flood have not yet been fully clarified by authorities.
