Portugal announced a plan to double its energy storage capacity by 2030, in an initiative aimed at strengthening the integration of renewable energies and the security of the national electricity system.
The National Storage Strategy sets a target of 6.9 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2030, rising to 9.76 gigawatts by 2040. These values represent a significant increase compared to the country's current capacity.
The document, which is currently under public consultation, outlines Portugal's vision for modernizing its energy infrastructure and reducing dependence on non-renewable sources.
The plan comes in the context of the European energy transition, where energy storage is considered fundamental to guarantee the stability of the electricity grid when the production of renewable sources, such as solar and wind, is intermittent.
