Álex Palou makes history again and is crowned five-time IndyCar champion

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General31 August 2026 at 07:23

Spanish driver Álex Palou made history again by being crowned five-time IndyCar champion, becoming the first driver to win five American championships in six years. The titles were won in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

The feat was achieved after Palou finished in tenth place in Race 1 at the Milwaukee oval, the competition that decided the season title. The Catalan driver no longer needed great results to secure the championship, thus consolidating his dominance in the category.

With this fifth Astor Cup, Álex Palou rises as the third most decorated driver in IndyCar history. He ranks just behind New Zealander Scott Dixon, who has six titles, and the legendary AJ Foyt, who achieved seven championships throughout his career.
