The municipality of Almada, in the district of Setúbal, will no longer be on alert this Monday, which had been decreed on July 8 due to water supply failures, with special incidence in Costa da Caparica, which led to several protests by the population. The situation was extended until August 31 following successive failures in the service.
According to the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Almada, reservoir levels have remained above 70%, reaching 72% on Sunday, which allows the situation to be viewed with greater tranquility.
During the alert period, restrictions on water consumption were implemented, including total supply cuts in certain areas of the municipality, from 10 pm to 6 am. All uses of public water network that were not for domestic or essential uses were prohibited, such as watering gardens and golf courses, washing vehicles, filling pools, and operating ornamental fountains. SMAS also carries out actions to repair points with significant water losses and eliminate irregular connections to the public network.
The Almada City Council, led by socialist Inês de Medeiros, reinforced the supply with new boreholes to minimize the impact of the problem. The socialist leadership, which has a management agreement with CDU as it was not elected with an absolute majority, was the target of a municipal motion of censure presented by PSD, which was rejected.
