Nepal raised on Monday the death toll to 903 and the number of missing to 4,247 after the devastating flood that hit last Wednesday a zone in the north and center of Nepal. The disaster occurred last week and authorities continue with search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The numbers were released in the latest report from the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMA), which has been monitoring the situation since the start of the catastrophe. The number of victims continues to rise as emergency teams access previously inaccessible areas.
The flood caused massive damage to infrastructure in the affected regions, with homes, roads, and other constructions completely destroyed. Nepali authorities are coordinating humanitarian relief efforts to assist the thousands of people displaced by the tragedy.
This disaster comes in a context of vulnerability for Nepal, which in recent years has faced multiple extreme climate phenomena that have exacerbated natural disaster risks in the country.
