Seductive design and radical content make screen time cease to be a metric for safe social media use

oglobo31 August 2026 at 07:30

The time children and adolescents spend in front of screens has lost ground among researchers as a metric for defining appropriate social media use. The number of hours spent in these environments is no longer the main criterion for evaluating whether use is safe or healthy for young people.

The current scenario is marked by applications with manipulative design and radicalized content, which makes defining a supposedly safe number of hours an unreal sense of protection for families. Setting time limits does not guarantee adequate protection against the risks present in these platforms.

Journalist Renata Cafardo is the author of the book "The Family Algorithm," launched this month, which addresses how the digital world challenges the way children are raised. The work offers a perspective on the challenges faced by parents in the digital age.

R$ 1 trillion in public procurement boosts AI adoption

The Brazilian public procurement market reached R$ 1 trillion in approved values on the National Public Procurement Portal (PNCP) in 2025, with over 1 million purchases made. Micro and small businesses accounted for 481.7 thousand purchases (R$ 272.6 billion) and individual microentrepreneurs for 62.22 thousand purchases (R$ 12.08 billion). The scale of this market has been driving demand for artificial intelligence and predictive analytics technologies to organize public databases and analyze contracts, suppliers, and procurement patterns. Grand View Research projects the global predictive analytics market to grow from US$ 18.9 billion in 2024 to US$ 82.3 billion in 2030, with an average annual rate of 28.3%.
