Carla Madeira is currently the most-read fiction author in Brazil. Her fourth novel, "Quando," has as its premise a mother who reports her son to the police, a story that reflects the personal chaos the author was facing behind the scenes. Her previous books include "Tudo é Rio," "A natureza da mordida," and "Véspera" (2021).
After finishing "Véspera," Carla still didn't feel ready to write again when a series of deaths occurred in her life. She was going through a moment of profound emotional difficulty, described as a situation where "real life became unbearable."
The author maintained a deep friendship with another woman, with whom she founded the advertising agency Lápis Raro. The two became pregnant together and gave birth to their daughters on the same day, and Carla even breastfed her friend's daughter. After her friend's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Carla followed the order of people she trusted: first the psychoanalyst, then the mother, and finally the best friend.
With the death of that friend, literature became Carla Madeira's only salvation. The experience of deep grief propelled her to return to writing, transforming her personal pain into literary creation.
