Sul Fluminense is the region with the best performance among the regions of the State of Rio de Janeiro in the Firjan Municipal Development Index (IFDM), which evaluates the areas of Health, Education, Employment, and Income. The region comprises 18 cities with distinct economic characteristics.
Volta Redonda and Barra Mansa concentrate steel, metallurgical, and metalworking activities associated with the National Steel Company (CSN). Resende, Porto Real, Itatiaia, and Quatis are part of the state's main automotive axis, with vehicle assembly plants and parts production. Angra dos Reis, Paraty, and Mangaratiba combine tourism, maritime activities, and energy infrastructure, while the Vale do Café brings together cities with historical heritage and strong tourism potential.
A study by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio (Firjan) from April of this year shows that industry accounts for 41.2% of the regional economy and 25% of jobs. Despite good economic performance, local development does not shield the region from the state's chronic problems.
