Three thousand new nurses seek work, but public hospitals cannot hire

CNN Portugal31 August 2026 at 07:30

Three thousand newly graduated nurses are looking for employment, but public hospitals cannot hire them. The situation is due to the lack of approval of the organizational development plans (PDO) for 2026, documents necessary for the Ministry of Finance to authorize new hires in the public sector.

Without the approval of the PDO, hospitals do not have authorization to open new positions, which blocks the integration of thousands of nurses into the job market. This situation directly affects professionals who have completed their training and expect to be placed in the public health sector.

The problem arises at a time when the health system already faces significant difficulties in guaranteeing adequate care to the population. The inability to hire nurses increases the pressure on professionals already in service and may compromise the quality of services provided.

The competent authorities have not yet indicated when the organizational development plans for 2026 will be available, leaving unresolved this impasse that affects thousands of young professionals and the functioning of public hospitals.

Oil returns to 90 dollars amid new attacks between US and Iran

The latest exchange of attacks between the USA and Iran, the first in over a month, caused oil prices to rise again above 90 dollars per barrel, with Brent rising almost 2%, to 89.84 dollars. The American army attacked Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, allegedly when Iranian forces were preparing to launch mines in that strategic waterway. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles against US bases in Jordan, which were intercepted. Analysts from DBS Bank and Gallo Partners point out that, although a prolonged escalation is considered unlikely, tensions continue to delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, key to world oil traffic.
