War worsens TAP's loss by 40% to almost 100 million

Jornal de Negócios31 August 2026 at 07:15

The Portuguese airline TAP recorded a loss of 99.2 million euros in the first half of 2026, representing a 40% worsening compared to the same period the previous year. This negative result reflects the financial difficulties faced by the company at the beginning of this year.

The significant increase in jet fuel costs was the main factor responsible for the deterioration of TAP's results. This rise in fuel prices was due to the conflict in the Middle East, which caused instability in global energy markets.

The impact of the war in the Middle East directly affected the aviation sector, forcing airlines to face operational costs much higher than expected. TAP was no exception and saw its financial performance penalized by this geopolitical situation.

Fuel prices drive TAP to 99 million losses

High fuel prices, driven by the Middle East war, led TAP to record losses of 99 million euros in the first half of this year, an increase of 28 million compared to the same period last year. In the second quarter, the impact was particularly severe, with a 97 million drop in profits to losses of 59 million. TAP's CEO, Luís Rodrigues, explained that the significant increase in jet fuel prices directly pressured costs, while revenue mitigation measures tend to materialize more gradually, since much of the second quarter's revenue was already sold when prices rose.
