Actress, director and playwright Rafaela Azevedo, a 35-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, premieres this Wednesday (2nd) the solo "A igreja da Fran" at Teatro Clara Nunes, in Rio de Janeiro, after performances in São Paulo. It is the second monologue of a trilogy starring the character Fran, following "King Kong Fran," which filled stages across Brazil and abroad for three years addressing normalized misogyny in society.
In the new play, Rafaela expands the discussion to include the relationship between patriarchy and religion. During research that lasted approximately a year, the author delved into the texts and controversies of Christian religions, whose followers in Brazil exceed 80% of the population according to the 2022 census.
The playwright stated that she needed to be "much more didactic" in this show. She declared that, after researching the topic, she began thinking: "I'll never be able to not look at this again." What impacted her most during the research was the theme of pedophilia, with recent studies revealing alarming numbers such as 440,000 children abused in Spain and 230,000 in France, while in Brazil such investigation has not yet arrived.
