Statistics indicate that the number of forest fires is decreasing slightly, but those that occur are much more severe. The professionals dedicated to extinction confirm that everything indicates that the situation will not improve in the future unless the way prevention is approached is reconsidered.
Miquel Ferriz, with 18 years of experience as a forest fire fighter, the last ten in Sant Mateu, shares his personal experience and professional claims in this permanent fight against fire, even when there are no flames.
Ferriz states: "We are used to being news when summer arrives and when it passes, they forget about us", evidencing the lack of recognition outside the highest risk season.
The specialists warn that it is necessary to rethink prevention to face a problem that is worsening with current climate conditions.
