Lula government attempts to reopen tariff negotiations in meeting with US Trade Representative

oglobo31 August 2026 at 04:00

The ministers of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, and of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, met this Monday with the United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, in an attempt by the Brazilian government to reopen negotiations on the tariffs. The meeting was held virtually in the afternoon, in Brasília time.

The Lula government's expectation is to resume talks about American tariffs, which were suspended on July 14. In the week prior to the meeting, Márcio Elias Rosa stated that he expected a difficult dialogue, since negotiations with the American government had already been dragging on for a year without significant progress.

In July, the United States announced the decision to apply tariffs of 25% and 12.5% on products exported to the American market. According to the publication, these rates add up, representing a significant impact for Brazilian exporters seeking access to the United States market.
