Government cuts one cent in diesel discount from Monday

Braga TV30 August 2026 at 21:18

The Government will reduce, from Monday, August 31, the discount applied through the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products to fuels. This measure represents a change in the tax incentives previously in force.

In the case of diesel, the discount goes from 8.16 cents per liter to 7.16 cents per liter, which corresponds to a reduction of exactly one cent. This decrease directly affects consumers who use this type of fuel.

Regarding gasoline, the reduction in the discount is smaller compared to that applied to diesel, although the article does not specify the concrete values of the decrease for this fuel.

Interest rates on the rise

This article analyses the external factors influencing interest rates in the eurozone and Portugal. The author, Pedro Braz Teixeira, explains that the global real interest rate has been rising due to increased demand for savings, driven by public deficits and investment in artificial intelligence in the USA. Short-term nominal interest rates are dominated by energy inflation, exacerbated by the US conflict with Iran. In the long term, US fiscal irresponsibility and increased domestic investment in Japan are putting pressure on rates. The French political situation also contributes to contagion. Although Portugal is in a relatively favourable position thanks to the reduction of public debt, it will not escape the negative effects of these external influences.

Affordable housing: who will be left with the debt?

The article analyses how Portuguese public procurement legislation structurally allows contractors to add costs to contracts after signing, and applies this analysis to the Government's affordable housing programme. Based on real data from the BASE Portal and IMPIC, which show an average deviation of 6.44% between the contracted value and the final executed value in public works in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, the article calculates that the programme could have a potential additional cost of approximately 119.2 million euros. Of these, approximately 86.3 million relate to the component financed by a credit line from the European Investment Bank, meaning debt that will be paid by future generations who did not participate in the decision. The author argues this is the real debate that remains to be had about public housing financing in Portugal.
