"Fernando Pimenta is one of the greatest names in the history of Portuguese sport"

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, congratulated Fernando Pimenta for the two gold medals won at the Sprint Canoeing World Championships, held in Poznan, Poland. Fernando Pimenta won the K1 1,000 meters and the K1 5,000 meters at these world championships.

By winning the K1 5,000 meters event for the third time in his career, Fernando Pimenta became the most decorated athlete ever on this distance. The President of the Republic emphasized that this achievement reaffirms Fernando Pimenta's place among the greatest names in the history of Portuguese sport.

António José Seguro also praised the other results of the Portuguese team, namely the silver of João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista in the K2 500 meters and the bronze of the K4 500 meters, won by Gustavo Gonçalves, João Ribeiro, Messias Baptista and Pedro Casinha.

The head of state highlighted that these four results, including two gold medals, confirm Portuguese canoeing as a world reference in the sport.

O Presidente da República, António José Seguro, felicitou Fernando Pimenta pelas duas medalhas de ouro conquistadas nos Mundiais de Velocidade, em Poznan, na Polónia. O chefe de Estado destacou o título mundial de Fernando Pimenta no K1 5.000 metros, o segundo conquistado pelo atleta nestes campeonatos, depois do ouro no K1 1.000 metros. “Ao vencer esta prova pela terceira vez na carreira, tornando-se o atleta mais medalhado de sempre nesta distância, Fernando Pimenta reafirma o seu lugar entre os maiores nomes da história do desporto português”, lê-se na nota da Presidência. António José Seguro saudou igualmente a medalha de prata conquistada por João Ribeiro e Messias Baptista no K2 500 metros e o bronze do K4 500 metros, alcançado por Gustavo Gonçalves, João Ribeiro, Messias Baptista e Pedro Casinha. “Estes resultados de excelência – quatro medalhas, duas delas de ouro – confirmam a canoagem portuguesa como referência mundial da modalidade”, sublinhou.
