Turkey: Hollywood fever with "Odyssey" relaunches debate about Homer in Smyrna

Euronews Portugal29 August 2026 at 10:37

The film "The Odyssey", directed by Christopher Nolan, has brought international attention back to the city of Smyrna, in Turkey, reigniting the ancient debate about the origin of the poet Homer. The cinematic work contributes to a kind of "Hollywood fever" around the theme.

Archaeologist Aylin Ümit Erdem gave an interview analyzing the ancient clues that could link Homer to the city of Smyrna. According to her, there are historical and archaeological indications that support this possibility.

However, the specialist explains that the concrete material proof that would definitively link Homer to Smyrna has not yet been found. The lack of definitive physical evidence keeps the debate open between historians and archaeologists.

The case illustrates a common situation in Mediterranean archaeology, where connections between legendary historical figures and specific places often remain without definitive resolution, depending on interpretations of indirect remains.
