The Brazilian Academy of Cinema released this week the 15 films eligible to compete for Brazil's spot in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscar. In parallel, Argentina is preparing to choose its representative in September, amid a new crop of productions that will have a strong presence at the major international festivals.
Argentine cinematography has a tradition in the award, having won the Best International Feature Film Oscar twice. The first victory came with "The Official Story" in 1986, followed by "The Secret in Their Eyes" in 2010. These achievements place the country among the most successful in Latin America in the award.
In the last two seasons, however, it was Brazilian cinema that stood out in the competition. "I'm Still Here" took the statuette in 2025, while "The Secret Agent" received nominations in four categories this year, stealing the spotlight among Latin American films at the ceremony.
The new generation of Argentine filmmakers emerges with high expectations, targeting the major world festivals and the next edition of the Oscar. The moment represents a renewal in the country's film production, which seeks to regain its space in international competition after Brazil's recent prominence.
