Gustavo do Canto finished in 10th place in the men's individual triathlon event, held on the city circuit of Taranto, in Italy, on the day of the sport's debut at the Mediterranean Games. The Portuguese athlete was the best national representative in the event, completing the competition with a time of 56 minutes and 45 seconds.
The winner of the event was Greek Panagiotis Bitados, who finished with a time of 53 minutes and 47 seconds, leaving Gustavo do Canto 2 minutes and 58 seconds behind the first place. The Portuguese performance allowed him to stay among the top ten classified, achieving a notable result among the participants.
The Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games run from August 21 to September 3, bringing together 3854 athletes from 26 countries of the Mediterranean basin. The competition is considered one of the most important multi-sport events on the international calendar.
The event was marked by the high temperatures recorded in Taranto, which significantly increased the difficulties for athletes throughout the various segments of the competition. Despite the demanding conditions, Gustavo do Canto managed to complete the race successfully.
