Two years ago today, a GNR helicopter crashed in the Douro, resulting in the death of five military personnel. The aircraft crashed near the locality of Samodães, in the municipality of Lamego, in the Douro region.
The GNR team was returning from a fire that had occurred in Baião when the accident occurred. The military personnel were on their way to the Aerial Means Center in Armamar, in the district of Viseu.
The five fatalities were military personnel from the Republican National Guard. This was one of the most tragic accidents involving GNR members in Portugal in recent years.
The accident caused great national commotion, with authorities initiating investigations to determine the causes of the aircraft crash in the Douro area.
