Iceland rejected in a referendum the resumption of European Union accession negotiations. The result was close, with 52.8% of votes against reopening talks with Brussels, while 47.2% voted in favor of continuing the process.
The Icelandic government has already announced that it will respect the popular decision expressed at the polls. The referendum consultation represented an important milestone in the relationship between Iceland and the European bloc.
Iceland's EU accession process had been previously abandoned, and this referendum decided whether the country should resume talks with Brussels. The victory of the "no" vote closes, for now, any prospect of integration of the Nordic country into the European bloc.
