After death of 13-year-old teenager, Justice schedules hearing between government and Discord

cbn30 August 2026 at 11:29

Federal Justice in Brasília scheduled for next Wednesday a conciliation hearing between the Brazilian government and the Discord platform. The meeting includes representatives from the Union, the company, and the Federal Public Ministry, all with knowledge of the facts and authority to negotiate. A representative from the National Data Protection Agency may also participate collaboratively to provide clarifications, but without formally acting as a party in the case.

The federal government wants Discord to pay compensation for moral damages in the amount of 500 million reais. Additionally, it demands that the platform comply with the Digital ECA requirements and be required to implement measures to provide greater safety for internet users, especially children, teenagers, and women.

Last Wednesday, the Brazilian government filed a public civil action against Discord. The decision was made after the Presidential Palace ended negotiations with the platform without reaching an agreement for signing a Conduct Adjustment Agreement, which would have been a voluntary commitment from the company to align its practices with Brazilian legal requirements.

The lawsuit stems from the death of a 13-year-old teenager, whose passing would be related to content disseminated on the platform. The case has reignited the debate about social media companies' responsibility in protecting minors and moderating harmful content.
