NOW no Nepal: Authorities attempt to recover destroyed bank vault

Now30 August 2026 at 11:28

Rescue operations are ongoing in Nepal, including the search for goods in destroyed areas, where accumulated mud represents security risks for local inhabitants. The situation in the affected areas remains critical, with authorities trying to assess the damage caused by the disaster.

One of the structures hit was a bank, whose vault was destroyed. The efforts to find and recover the vault inside the building took several hours, with an excavator needing to be used to carry out the rescue operation.

A local source told NOW that the vault sank into the mud, which significantly hindered the task and caused the withdrawal of money to take longer than initially planned. This fact contributed to the complexity of the recovery operation.

However, the situation generated controversy, with some voices questioning why authorities are prioritizing money over the population affected by the disaster.
