"Housing is the main barrier to access and attendance of Higher Education" But it is a "problem of the whole society"

TVI Notícias30 August 2026 at 09:55

Francisco Porto Fernandes, president of the Academic Federation of Porto, warned that housing is the main obstacle to access and attendance of Higher Education in Portugal. According to the official, many families face great difficulties in affording the rent for a room when their children are displaced students.

The average housing costs are around 400 to 450 euros in Porto and 500 euros in Lisbon, values that represent a significant barrier for many students and their families.

Francisco Porto Fernandes argued that this issue is not just a problem of Higher Education, but rather a problem of the entire society, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to resolve the housing crisis affecting displaced students.
