Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on citizens to fight for democracy. In a rare public intervention since leaving office, Merkel argued that people must "really fight" for democracy.

Merkel stressed that this fight is something that has not needed to be done for many decades, but that now it is essential to simply defend democracy.

The former chancellor's call comes amid growing concerns about democratic erosion in various European countries and the rise of populist and extremist movements.

Merkel, who governed Germany for 16 years, has maintained a low profile since leaving office in 2021, making this public intervention relatively unusual.
