Estarreja: PS calls for reinforcement of Antuã river banks to prevent new floods

NotíciasdeAveiro.pt30 August 2026 at 00:05

The PS councilors in Estarreja City Council warned at the last meeting of the municipal executive about the need to reinforce the banks of the Antuã River, particularly at the points that suffered the most damage during the last winter.

The socialist elected officials recalled that the collapse of the right bank, caused by the floods at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026, generated expenses of many thousands of euros for residents in restoring the banks and cleaning agricultural land. Although the repairs and cleaning carried out allowed farmers to cultivate their land again, the councilors warn that without complementary reinforcement work at critical points, the same areas will be damaged again.

The PS also drew attention to the strong silting of the river in the area between the Porto de Vacas bridge and the Quimigal sluice gates, considered a critical and historically problematic area, advocating for the removal of sand and accumulated vegetation in the riverbed to increase water retention capacity during floods.

In response, the Mayor, Isabel Simões Pinto, took stock of the work carried out after winter and informed that studies and projects are underway for a future technical intervention coordinated with the entities involved in the region's water management.
