Norway's new king pays tribute to his father as tens of thousands mourn Harald V's death

Norway's new King Haakon VIII dedicated his first speech as monarch today to his father, Harald V, who died on Friday at the age of 89, remembering him as a loving father and a dedicated monarch. "We are in mourning. At the same time, it is comforting and gives us strength to know that so many share this mourning with us," said the new King of Norway, dressed in black, in a speech broadcast live on public television NRK.

Harald V passed away on Friday morning at the age of 89 after a long illness. His son, until then crown prince, ascended to the throne and became known as Haakon VIII, becoming Norway's new monarch.

The new king's speech was marked by a strong emotional charge, with Haakon publicly expressing the pain of the royal family while thanking the expressions of support received from across the country. The funeral ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, when a large mobilization of Norwegian citizens is expected to pay tribute to the deceased king.
