US Access to Venezuelan Oil Not Expected to Impact Market in Short Term

cbn29 August 2026 at 20:16

President of the United States Donald Trump announced an agreement that grants American access to over 65 billion barrels of oil in Venezuela's reserves. The agreement was negotiated with the country's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, and was announced on Friday (28).

According to Trump, the pact could attract up to $100 billion in private investments to Venezuela. The Caribbean country has the largest known oil reserves in the world, estimated at about 303 billion barrels.

According to experts, the impact on gasoline prices in the short term remains uncertain. The construction and modernization of the infrastructure needed to produce, transport, and refine Venezuelan heavy oil could take a long time, which means the agreement is not expected to produce immediate effects on the world market.

Lisbon creche wins the absenteeism battle and maintains four-day week

Centro Infantil Maria de Monserrate, in Lisbon, became the world's first creche to implement a four-day week, maintaining Monday to Friday operation for children. The association Caminhos da Infância, which manages the facility with 92 children and 25 staff members, decided to maintain the hybrid model (two weeks with four days, one with five) after a pilot project, adapting to the rhythm of activities and the needs of families. The 15% reduction in working hours required hiring an additional staff member, a cost offset by adjustments to extra-salary benefits. Executive director Inês Poeiras notes that absenteeism has improved significantly, but staff retention remains a challenge due to competition from public sector salaries, which IPSS cannot compete with.

Chevron negotiates expanding operations in Venezuela, in potential victory for Trump

Chevron is in advanced negotiations to significantly expand its operations in Venezuela, possibly announcing a deal as early as next week. The second largest U.S. oil company, the only one with a significant presence in Caracas, is reinforcing efforts to revitalize Venezuela's struggling oil industry. The deal would represent a victory for the Trump administration, which has been pressuring American companies to play a larger role in the country's energy sector. On Friday, Trump also said the U.S. reached a deal to take majority control of a large portion of Venezuela's oil reserves.
