Parents want shorter summer holidays and schools open all year round

ZAP Notícias29 August 2026 at 17:30

CONFAP - National Commission of Parent Associations expressed opposition to school summer holidays, considering them too long and significantly affecting parents' lives. The confederation will present to the Government a proposal for schools to remain open throughout the year.

The main complaint from parents relates to the disparity between school holiday time and parents' holiday time. While students have 15 weeks of summer holidays, most parents only have 22 days of vacation per year.

Many parents also point to the lack of family support as an additional difficulty. Many do not have family members available to look after their children during the long school break periods, which creates practical problems in family and work organization.

CONFAP hopes that the proposal presented to the Executive will allow a better balance between children's school life and parents' professional life, offering a solution for families facing these difficulties during prolonged holidays.
