Royal Navy concludes 'intense' surveillance operation on Russian shadow fleet ships in British waters

CNN Portugal29 August 2026 at 15:35

The British Royal Navy concluded a surveillance operation described as "intense" against Russian ghost fleet ships in the United Kingdom's territorial waters. The operation closely tracked the movements of Russian vessels operating under the so-called "flags of convenience" system, a practice that allows vessels to conceal their true ownership and origin.

The British Ministry of Defence stated that, as a result of this surveillance, Russia was forced to mobilize costly military resources to protect its cargo. Specifically, the Neustrashimy frigate was highlighted, which had to be sent to escort and protect the ghost fleet ships in British waters.

The Russian ghost fleet is composed of old, degraded ships that transport oil and other goods, frequently deviating from normal routes to avoid international sanctions. These ships operate with false identities and invalid insurance, representing a significant risk to maritime and environmental security.

British authorities consider that the surveillance operation demonstrated the vulnerability of Russian logistics and the high cost that the United Kingdom can impose on Russian maritime activity without resorting to direct confrontation. The mobilization of the Neustrashimy frigate is seen as an indicator of the annoyance caused by these monitoring operations in UK waters.

Sines fulfills the Banho 29 tradition between early morning dip and memory procession

The Banho 29 tradition was fulfilled again in the municipality of Sines, district of Setúbal, with two distinct initiatives: in the morning, in Porto Covo, about a hundred people, mostly young, swam in the sea at 7am, maintaining a tradition followed for years; two hours later, in Sines, a procession took place with women and men dressed as peasants, with combinations, caps and pajamas, to the sound of the Philharmonic Band, descending the streets of the city to Vasco da Gama beach, where participants also entered the water. The president of the Parish Council of Sines highlighted that the tradition represents "the connection that local people have with the sea" and allows us to understand "the evolution of customs". After the swim, a shared snack was served on the beach.

Padilha says he is also trying to contact the USA 'individually' regarding Lito Souza's case

The Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, said he is in contact with the United States — both through the ministry and individually — to try to integrate pilot and influencer Lito Sousa, 59 years old, into a study at Harvard University on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, an incurable and untreatable disease. Padilha explained that he was contacted by Lito's wife, Mila Seidl, and decided to make contact not only as a government representative but also individually, because, according to him, a government asking something from another government for internal matters can seem strange, especially when it involves a research group.
