The former leader of Ecuador Lenin Moreno was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption. The sentence was handed down by Ecuadorian justice against the former President who governed the country between 2017 and 2021.

Moreno was convicted of accepting bribes from a Chinese state-owned company. In exchange for these illegal payments, he allegedly facilitated the obtaining of a contract for the construction of a hydroelectric power plant.

The case involves corruption practices during Moreno's presidential term. Ecuadorian justice considered it proven that the former president acted in favor of Chinese business interests in exchange for personal financial advantage.

Social Security will verify the income of beneficiaries of the new Single Social Benefit (PSU) not only at the time of assignment but also during annual renewal, and may also carry out additional checks whenever there are signs of changes in income.
