Açoriano Oriental28 August 2026 at 17:54

Almost 14 thousand patients were awaiting surgery in the Azores at the end of July, according to data revealed by the Regional Health Directorate. This number represents the highest value since records have been available on the official website of the Regional Health Directorate.

The autonomous region of the Azores thus faces an unprecedented situation regarding surgical waiting lists. The growth in the number of patients waiting for surgical intervention has been increasing significantly.

The now known data was made available through the digital platform of the Regional Health Directorate, where the performance indicators of the regional health system are monitored. This tool allows tracking the evolution of waiting lists over time.

The moment coincides with a period when the regional health system faces increased challenges in managing the demand for surgical care. The situation places pressure on the health authorities of the Azores to find solutions to reduce the waiting time for patients.
