Ruble falls against dollar to April 2025 lows

SAPO Notícias28 August 2026 at 16:34

The ruble, the Russian currency, fell today against the dollar to April 2025 lows, reaching historically low values. The currency's devaluation reflects the economic difficulties Russia has been facing in recent months.

The main cause of this decline is associated with a significant reduction in Russian exports, particularly of oil, which is one of the main pillars of the country's economy. The decrease in oil revenues has been weakening the ruble in the foreign exchange market.

This scenario emerges in a context of continuous economic pressures on Russia, where international sanctions and the drop in crude prices have contributed to the deterioration of the country's financial situation.

"I was very lucky": woman with 40 years of contributions retires at 62 with a pension of €2,700 and says she is "satisfied"

Laurence, a former Air France flight attendant, retired in 2023 at 62 with a monthly pension of around 2,700 euros, almost 87.5% of her last net salary of 3,084 euros. The amount results from the combination of the French public pension (around 1,200 euros) with the complementary benefit from the Professional Civil Aviation Crew Pension Fund (CRPN), which pays her approximately 1,500 euros monthly. With 40 years of contributions and 32 years at Air France, Laurence managed to meet the conditions necessary to access the full pension without reductions, benefiting from a specific complementary scheme for civil aviation crew in France.

S&P Global keeps national debt rating at 'A+' with 'positive' outlook

The S&P Global Ratings agency maintained Portugal's public debt rating at 'A+' with a 'positive' outlook on Friday, in its second scheduled assessment of the year. This rating has been in effect since February, when S&P upgraded the economic outlook from 'stable' to 'positive', following an improvement in the rating a year earlier. Analysts had expected the agency to wait for the presentation of the 2027 State Budget before making any changes. S&P assigns the highest level to Portugal among the major international rating agencies, with Fitch assigning 'A' (due to report on September 12) and Moody's 'A3' (review scheduled for November 17), while DBRS grants 'A (high)'.

Standard & Poor's maintains rating and "positive" outlook for Portuguese public debt

Standard & Poor's decided to maintain the Portuguese public debt rating at "A+" and the "positive" outlook, a decision expected by economists. The agency highlighted Portugal's "resilient economic growth" and considered that the rise in energy prices due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will have "a moderate impact" on the Portuguese economy this year, due to the country's low energy intensity, the positive effect of tourism, and the acceleration of investment resulting from PRR. S&P justifies the positive outlook by the expectation that prudent public policies will allow the country to absorb budgetary pressures without compromising the reduction of public debt.
