Gastroenteritis in the Azores "above expected" but norovirus drops on three islands

Açoriano Oriental28 August 2026 at 17:16

The Azores Health Authority announced that, until Wednesday, there was a "higher than expected increase" in acute gastroenteritis cases in the region. This situation represents a significant increase in cases of the disease compared to values normally expected for this time of year.

Despite the overall increase in cases, health authorities highlighted a positive development on three specific islands. Norovirus transmission is falling on the islands of Faial, Flores, and Terceira, which indicates a decrease in the spread of the viral agent on these islands.

Acute gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that can be caused by various agents, including viruses such as norovirus, bacteria, and parasites. Norovirus is known for causing frequent outbreaks, especially in environments with close proximity between people.
