Reader Dina Leitão photographed a passerine bird in Lezíria de Vila Franca de Xira in August and asked for help identifying the species. In Portugal, 2025 is being marked by the massive presence of the Tagus jellyfish (Catostylus tagi), which represents more than 60% of the sightings recorded by the GelAvista project, compared to only 14% the previous year. For the first time in ten years, the Sado estuary concentrates the majority of records (60%), surpassing the traditional Tagus estuary area. This large species, distinguished by its eight oral arms shaped like bunches of grapes, has been sighted in varied tones and is frequently washed up on beaches. Researchers have not yet identified which environmental variable triggered this exceptional production in the Sado, but the data suggest a higher natural abundance of this species in the region this year.
