The health authorities advised against swimming at four beaches in the municipality of Espinho due to microbiological contamination. This recommendation comes following laboratory analyses that detected high levels of bacteria and other microorganisms harmful to human health in the waters of these beaches.
The problem identified in Espinho is not an isolated case. The microbiological contamination also affected other municipalities in the North region of the country, which suggests a broader situation that may be related to environmental factors or failures in the sanitation systems of the affected coastal areas.
The competent authorities recommend that bathers avoid contact with the water at the flagged beaches until new analyses confirm that contamination levels have returned to safe parameters. The situation is being monitored and new sample collections will be carried out to assess the evolution of water quality.
