Municipal Market of Barcelos reopens doors after six years of works

Mais Guimarães28 August 2026 at 12:53

The Municipal Market of Barcelos reopened its doors after six years of works, representing the return of traders to the original building. During this period, the market operated in temporary facilities. The intervention created a renovated space with two large covered areas and a new organization of commercial spaces, seeking to recover the importance of the market in the commercial dynamics of the city.

The new market has different areas distributed across the various floors. The first floor was destined for the fish zone and administrative services, while the butcher shops started operating on the upper floor. In the central area are the horticultural and fruit products, with six shops. The space also has establishments dedicated to crafts, wine shop, bakery and knitwear.

At the southern end of the building a café/bar was installed, adding a new function to the space and contributing to its use as a place of commerce and socializing. The intervention intends to return to the market renewed conditions to welcome traders and consumers, maintaining its function as a traditional space for commerce and meeting in the city.

The reopening ceremony took place on Monday at 12:00, marking the beginning of a new stage for one of the reference commercial facilities in Barcelos.
