The Brazilian Association of Tire Importers and Distributors (ABIDIP) warned that the combination of recent typhoons in China and congestion at major Asian ports is pressuring tire supply in Brazil. The impacts are observed in shipments scheduled between September 1 and 7, when the freight for a 40-foot container rose from about $3,000 to ranges between $8,000 and $9,500, depending on the carrier, space availability, and negotiating conditions.
Strategic ports, such as Shanghai and Ningbo, temporarily suspended operations as a safety measure. Data tracked by ABIDIP indicates that more than 800 ships remained anchored awaiting favorable weather conditions, and approximately 2.4 million TEUs (unit equivalent to a 20-foot container) were affected. The congestion buildup at major Chinese terminals is near 400,000 TEUs.
The situation has generated uncertainties in the Brazilian tire market, with suppliers trying to find alternative logistics to minimize delays in deliveries. ABIDIP recommends that importers and distributors closely monitor the evolution of the scenario and consider adjusting their inventory planning in light of current difficulties in international maritime transport.
