Portugal with Matilde Calado and Filipe Vitó qualified for the European Volleyball Championship "quarter-finals"

The national women's senior volleyball team achieved an unprecedented feat by securing qualification for the quarter-finals of the European Championship, in its second participation in a final phase of the competition. The Portuguese team, which includes libero Matilde Calado, from Espinho and athlete of SC Braga, and assistant coach Filipe Vitó, secured qualification after a difficult victory against Romania by 3-2, with set scores of 15-25, 26-24, 20-25, 27-25 and 15-13, in the last matchday of Pool C held at the National Gymnastics Arena, in Baku.

With the passport stamped for the quarter-finals, Portugal now travels to Turkey, where the next round matches will take place on August 31 and September 1 at the Sinan Erdem Sports Hall, in Istanbul. In the knockout round, the Portuguese team will face Turkey, the home team and first place finisher of Pool A.

The final phase of the EuroVolley runs until September 6, divided across four host countries: Turkey in Pool A, Czech Republic in Pool B, Azerbaijan in Pool C and Sweden in Pool D. Portugal secured its second appearance in the history of the competition by qualifying as one of the best second-placed teams from the qualification phase.

Pool C, where Portugal was placed in Baku, proved to be quite demanding, facing the Netherlands (European bronze medalists and 6th in the world ranking), Belgium (11th in the world ranking), Romania, Spain and host nation Azerbaijan.

A seleção nacional de seniores femininos alcançou uma proeza inédita na sua segunda participação numa fase final de um Campeonato da Europa com o apuramento para os oitavos de final.

A seleção das quinas, que conta com a líbero espinhense, Matilde Calado que representa o SC Braga e com o treinador adjunto Filipe Vitó, garantiu a qualificação com uma vitória arrancada a ferros sobre a Roménia por 3-2 (15-25, 26-24, 20-25, 27-25 e 15-13), na última jornada da Pool C, disputada na National Gymnastics Arena, em Baku.

Com o passaporte carimbado para os oitavos de final, a comitiva portuguesa viaja agora para a Turquia. Os jogos da próxima fase realizam-se a 31 de agosto e 1 de setembro no complexo Sinan Erdem Sports Hall, em Istambul, onde Portugal irá cruzar-se com o primeiro classificado da Pool A, a equipa da casa, a Turquia.

A fase final do EuroVolley decorre até ao dia 6 de setembro e divide-se por quatro países: Turquia (Pool A), Chéquia (Pool B), Azerbaijão (Pool C) e Suécia (Pool D). A seleção portuguesa, que garantiu a sua segunda presença da história na competição como uma das melhores segundas classificadas da fase de qualificação, integrou um Grupo C bastante exigente em Baku, onde mediu forças com os Países Baixos (bronze europeu e 6.ª do ranking mundial), Bélgica (11.ª do ranking mundial), Roménia, Espanha e o anfitrião Azerbaijão.
