Rescue operations resume in Nepal after lake created by avalanche overflows

cbn28 August 2026 at 12:08

Rescue operations resumed on Friday (28) in areas affected on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China, after a sudden avalanche that occurred on Wednesday (26). The teams had suspended their activities due to the overflow of a dammed lake formed by the blockage of debris in Tibet, an autonomous region in southeast China.

With the water beginning to drain and the likelihood of new floods decreasing, authorities considered the flood risks as "controllable," allowing local and Chinese teams to resume rescue work. The immediate risk of flooding was declared as ended.

However, authorities warn that, with more rain forecast in the coming days, there is a high risk of the debris barrier breaking and new flooding. Residents of the affected areas have been instructed to stay away from river banks as a safety measure.
