Bolieiro's Government in the Azores Tests New Work Organization Almerinda Romeira / 28 Aug 2026

Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 07:32

The Azores became the first region in Portugal to move forward with a four-day week experiment in the public sector. Since January, 400 workers from 14 government departments tested a reduced work schedule for six months, with the project ending at the end of June 2026. The report with the results will be ready by September.

The project was coordinated by Rita Fontinha, a professor at the Henley Business School at the University of Reading, with Pedro Gomes as co-coordinator. Workers joined voluntarily and the project was also presented to the unions, with two proposals on the table: working 32 hours per week in four days of eight hours, or in four days of seven hours and a fifth day of four hours. In both cases, there were no cuts in remuneration.

Pedro Gomes revealed that departments did not reduce their opening hours nor hire more workers, with the focus being on improving processes and using technology. The co-coordinator added that the project "went very well."

José Manuel Bolieiro's Government intends to understand the impact of this measure on productivity and worker satisfaction, without compromising the quality of service provided. The goal is to identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce bureaucracy, and make public sector employment more attractive to young people.

Venezuela: USA negotiating with country participation in oil fields

The United States is negotiating with Venezuela's interim government to acquire stakes in more than a dozen of the country's oil fields, including the possibility of a 100-year concession, according to Axios and Bloomberg. The talks, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and interim President Delcy Rodríguez, aim to substantially increase US oil reserves and allow greater participation of US companies in the exploration and development of Venezuelan oil assets. Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, but its production has remained below historical levels due to infrastructure degradation and the economic crisis. The negotiations come after Washington eased sanctions to allow American companies to return to the country.
