United States considers new tariffs on semiconductors

The US administration is considering a new round of tariffs on semiconductors, according to eight sources familiar with the matter cited by Politico. The measures under study include separate rates and quotas for each country, exemptions conditioned on investment in production in the US, and the expansion of tariffs to products made with chips, such as laptops, consoles, and servers. The government aims to incentivize domestic semiconductor production and reinforce the role of the United States in artificial intelligence. White House spokesperson Kush Desai defended that reshoring production is one of Donald Trump's main priorities. However, an executive from a tech company who served in the first Trump administration criticized the measure, considering it harmful to American dominance in AI.
