Venezuela: USA negotiating with country participation in oil fields

Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 09:04

The United States is negotiating with Venezuela's interim government to acquire a significant stake in several of the country's oil fields, according to information from Axios and Bloomberg. The talks include the possibility of the United States obtaining a 100-year concession and seek to facilitate greater participation of American companies in the exploration and development of Venezuela's main oil assets, covering more than a dozen fields currently in operation.

On the American side, the negotiations are led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while Venezuela is represented by interim President Delcy Rodríguez. The US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, is preparing a trip to the country to try to boost production by American companies.

Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, estimated at around 300 billion barrels, although its production has remained well below historical levels due to infrastructure degradation and years of economic crisis. Axios indicates that the agreement could more than double US oil reserves.

The negotiations are part of the Donald Trump Administration's strategy to increase the participation of American companies in the Venezuelan oil sector and come after Washington eased sanctions to allow American companies and oil operators to return to the country.
