Guterres launches appeal for 940 million euros and calls for fight against "virus of indifference"

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, today launched an appeal for one billion dollars (940 million euros) to combat Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The appeal was made in statements to the press in New York.

Guterres criticized what he called the "virus of indifference" towards the epidemic, warning that the international community cannot ignore the humanitarian situation on the ground.

The current outbreak was described by the Secretary-General as the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic on record, noting that it is spreading faster and more widely than the response capacity to contain it.

Despite the worsening situation, Guterres stated that the disease can be stopped, expressing confidence in the possibility of controlling the epidemic with the appropriate resources.
