Air France-KLM increases offer in Portugal – 12% more capacity to and from five airports

NewsAvia15 September 2026 at 10:36

The Air France-KLM Group announced a 12 percent increase in its transport capacity offer in Portugal for the upcoming IATA Winter (2026-27), compared to the same period last year. The group's airlines — Air France, KLM and Transavia — will operate a total of 24 routes and up to 238 weekly frequencies, connecting the five Portuguese airports where they operate — Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada — from France, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Among the highlights of the winter program, Air France will double the flight frequency on the Porto-Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport route, with an overnight stop in Porto. Transavia will launch a new route between Porto and Brussels on December 14, with three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Overall, the expansion will result in a capacity increase of 35 percent in Madeira, 19 percent in Porto, 11 percent in Faro and 4 percent in Lisbon.

The group will also reinforce the use of next-generation aircraft on flights to and from Portugal, such as the Air France Airbus A220s on the Lisbon-Paris-CDG and Porto-Paris-CDG routes, and the KLM Airbus A321neo on the Lisbon-Amsterdam route. Through the code-share agreement with Delta Air Lines, direct flights from Lisbon to New York (JFK) and Boston are also offered year-round, in addition to the seasonal Porto-JFK service.

Air France celebrates 80 years in the Portuguese market this year, while KLM already accounts for 86 years of operations in Portugal. KLM started flying to the country in 1940 and inaugurated commercial service at Portela Airport in Lisbon in 1942, with a DC-3. Manuel Flahault, Managing Director of Air France-KLM for Portugal and Spain, stated that the capacity increase reflects the group's long-term commitment to the Portuguese market.

Why this matters

Readers in Portugal directly benefit from more flight options and greater connectivity, especially to Madeira (+35%) and Porto (+19%), which can boost tourism and business. The reinforcement of the Air France-KLM group's presence, which celebrates Air France's 80 years in Portugal, also strengthens transatlantic connections through the partnership with Delta Air Lines for routes to New York and Boston.

Buying a used car? These signs can reveal it was already a TVDE

When buying a used car in Portugal, it is important to know how to identify if the vehicle was previously used as a TVDE (Uber, Bolt), as it may have accumulated more wear and tear than it appears. The main signs include high mileage compared to the car's age, inspections more frequent than normal (TVDE vehicles undergo annual inspection from the first year), unusual wear on rear seats and door handles, marks on the windscreen from mounts or cameras, and traces of old stickers. The law approved in 2026 reinforces the identification of these vehicles with anti-fraud elements. A former TVDE vehicle is not necessarily a bad purchase, but the buyer should adjust the price and condition assessment, always requesting the complete documentary history and an independent mechanical evaluation before closing the deal.

Fuel. Spain increased its advantage since the beginning of the crisis

Spain expanded its fiscal advantage in fuels compared to Portugal since the beginning of the energy price crisis, even after restoring the standard VAT rate. The neighboring country reduced fuel taxes more aggressively and maintains lower prices, despite having reversed part of the extraordinary measures. Several other European countries have also been losing tax revenue in an attempt to curb the escalation of prices at the pumps.
