Blepharoplasty is a surgery aimed at correcting excess skin, laxity, and bags on the eyelids, currently being the most performed aesthetic procedure in the world, with more than 2 million procedures performed, according to a survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).
In recent years, the technique has been undergoing an important conceptual transformation. Instead of being limited to tissue removal, the so-called structured blepharoplasty is gaining ground, an approach that analyzes the set of structures in the eye region before defining what should be removed, preserved, or repositioned.
The difference between the two models lies in how the surgeon interprets the eyelid. Ophthalmologist Bárbara Mendes, specialized in ocular plastic surgery and practicing in Brasília (DF) and Unaí (MG), explains that traditional blepharoplasty has as its main focus the removal of excess skin and fat bags.
According to the specialist, structured blepharoplasty views the eyelid as part of a dynamic and interconnected system, seeking a more comprehensive approach to the gaze.
