The president of the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas, reiterated this Monday that the decentralization of education to municipalities "was a brutal error" in the capital. Moedas again expressed his critical position regarding the transfer of competencies in the area of education to local authorities.
The mayor stated that it is "absolutely unacceptable" that the Government transfers schools to municipalities without providing the necessary resources for their improvement and reconstruction. This complaint arises in the context of Lisbon facing financial difficulties to ensure the maintenance and requalification of school infrastructures that were delegated to it.
Moedas's position reflects an ongoing tension between the municipal executive and the central Government regarding the decentralization process, which has placed additional pressure on municipal budgets, particularly in urban areas such as Lisbon, where the investment needs in schools are significant.
