One in four Alentejo residents took medication without prescription in 2025

Alentrium15 September 2026 at 18:00

More than one in four residents in the Alentejo aged 15 or over reported having taken medication without a medical prescription in 2025. The proportion reached 26.2% in the region, according to the results of the National Health Survey released by Statistics Portugal. This value places the Alentejo below the national average, which reached 33.2% across the country. The indicator refers to consumption in the two weeks prior to the interview, not necessarily representing a habitual pattern of self-medication.

Among the regions highlighted by Statistics Portugal, the Algarve recorded the highest proportion, with 38.6%, followed by Greater Lisbon with 38%. The national results also reveal significant differences between age groups, with the highest proportion of non-prescription medication use occurring among those aged 35 to 44, reaching 40.4%.

The National Health Survey also outlines the profile of habitual prescribed medication use in Portugal. Arterial hypertension emerges as the condition most associated with this use, covering 27% of the population aged 15 or over, followed by cholesterol or triglyceride medication, used by 24.4%. Habitual use was also recorded for insomnia in 14.7% of the population, anxiety in 12.1%, and depression in 9.3%.

Differences between generations extend to access to health services. More than 80% of the elderly population without education and retired reported having had at least one general medicine consultation in the last year, while among young people aged 15 to 24 the proportion was 56%. The 2025 National Health Survey was conducted by Statistics Portugal based on a representative sample of approximately 22,000 households in Portugal.

Why this matters

Alentejo residents learn that their region is below the national average in non-prescription medication consumption, which may reflect different self-medication habits or better access to healthcare. Data on age groups and access to medical consultations allow the population to understand how they position themselves compared to the rest of the country in terms of health services usage.

Von der Leyen denounces Russian behavior as "reckless and dangerous" after new incidents

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday classified Russia's behavior as "reckless and dangerous," after two incidents: a Russian warship fired emergency flares dangerously close to a Danish helicopter in international waters off Denmark, and a drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus before being destroyed by NATO fighter jets. Von der Leyen said these are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe that has intensified since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and affirmed that the EU is reinforcing collective deterrence and defense together with NATO and increasing pressure on Russia.

Rocha Peixoto Secondary School Prepares for Start of School Year in Atypical Context

Rocha Peixoto Secondary School, in Póvoa de Varzim, prepares for the start of the school year with a focus on stability after a period marked by delays in the grading of national exams and the reapprciation processes, which generated anxiety in students and families. The leadership, led by Luís Fabião, guarantees individual follow-up so that no decision dependent on final grades compromises the start of classes, relying on the Welcome Plan as a central tool. The entry into force of the new law restricting the use of mobile phones up to the 3rd cycle is another notable element, with the school viewing the measure as a pedagogical opportunity to reinforce concentration and in-person interaction. In a year under administrative pressure and legislative changes, ESRP is betting on proximity and organization to ensure a serene school environment.
